The fastest player to ever run the 40-yard dash, the commonly accepted way of measuring a football player's speed, was wide receiver Josh Ross's 4.22-second dash he recorded in 2017. The NFL began recording 40-yard dash speeds in 1999.
After setting the record, Ross was drafted 9th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. The 40 yard dash record was previously held by Chris Johnson, who ran it in 4.24 seconds. Other NFL legends such as Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders have reportedly run faster times, but this was before the NFL made the 40-yard dash an official draft statistic.
