Usain Bolt set the world record for the 100-meter dash with a time of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin. Florence Griffith Joyner's record-setting 100-meter dash was 10.49 seconds in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis in 1988.
The first Olympic 100-meter dash took place at the 1896 Olympics, and the gold medal went to Thomas Burke of the United States for his 12-second time. The fastest male and female 100-meter sprinters at the Olympics are said to be the fastest man and woman in the world; at the 2012 Olympics, the gold medals went to Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
