Although softball pitcher Jennie Finch is sometimes cited as throwing pitches around 90 miles per hour, her average pitch speed is 65 miles per hour. This discrepancy in reported speed is because a softball mound is closer to home plate than in baseball.
Jennie Finch played collegiate softball at the University of Arizona where she won back-to-back national championships in her sophomore and junior seasons. Her jersey number was retired at the University in 2003. Finch went on to play professionally with the Chicago Bandits. She also won a gold medal for the USA softball team in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
