One of the largest team roping competitions in the country, this two-day event generally takes place in late February to mid-March. Registration takes place about 10 days prior to the event dates, according to the George Strait Team Roping Classic News Bulletins.
This team roping competition has been steadily growing since 1982 when George Strait and his brother, Buddy, started it as a family event in Kingsville, Texas. It became so successful that in 2000 the event moved to the larger San Antonio Rose Palace in San Antonio, Texas. More than 33 years later, the GSTRC draws over 650 teams on a regular basis. Teams compete for more than $750,000 worth of cash and prizes, including a brand new truck and trailer.
All roping teams compete on Friday, the first day of the event. On Saturday, the top 50 teams return for the final three rounds. Ropers can compete on up to three different teams. The competition is open to ropers of all levels.
