Jeff Gordon held the pole position in the 2015 Daytona 500. Other notable drivers who were in the 2015 Daytona 500 starting lineup include Joey Logano, Matt Crafton, Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick and Regan Smith. The 2015 Daytona 500 had 43 drivers in its starting lineup.
Logano, the eventual winner of the 2015 Daytona 500, was in the fifth position in the starting lineup. The top three positions were drivers who had previously won the Daytona 500: Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Other former winners who raced in the Daytona 500 include Kevin Harvick, who started in the 11th position; Jamie McMurray, who started 15th; and Ryan Newman, who started 22nd. Michael Waltrip, Matt Kenseth and Trevor Bayne, former winners of the race, also competed in the 2015 race.
Kyle Busch initially held the fourth position. However, he suffered a leg fracture in a race prior to the Daytona 500, so Crafton stepped in to substitute for Busch. Kurt Busch initially held the 24th position, but he was suspended by NASCAR prior to the race due to domestic violence charges. As a result, Smith substituted for Kurt Busch in the Daytona 500.
Stewart, who held the seventh position, is notable for being winless in 17 Daytona 500 races as of 2015. Patrick, who held the 20th position, is notable for being the only active female driver in the Sprint Cup Series of NASCAR as of 2015.
