To cause a car to drift, initiate a downshift, complete the shift down, and use a clutch-kick for turns or long-slide on straightaways. Causing a car to drift takes minutes and requires a car and basic knowledge of racecar driving. It should not be attempted off of a racetrack.
- Initiate a heel-and-toe downshift
Press the brake with your right foot. Use your left foot to depress the clutch. Shift into neutral, then release the clutch.
- Complete the downshift
Keep the ball of your right foot on the brake while moving the heel to the gas pedal. Make the engine rev until the revolutions per minute, or rpm, increases by 1,500 per gear. Release the gas pedal while still applying the brake. Push the clutch in and shift down.
- Use a clutch-kick drift on a turn
When you start approaching the turn, keep the clutch depressed with your left foot. Increase the rpm, and down shift. Release the clutch. The resultant power surge causes the back wheels to lose traction and drift back and forth.
- Use the long-slide drift on a straightaway
After completing a downshift, the car needs to be at a minimum of 100 mph. While on a straightaway, pull the emergency brake. The wheels lock, causing the drift in the back. This technique can be used in both front-wheel and rear-wheel drive cars.
