Other division 1 AA football teams are Montana, University of Northern Iowa, Fordham, Chattanooga and William & Mary. Division 1-AA teams are members of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Jacksonville State University is located in Jacksonville, Alabama, and is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. North Dakota State University is located in Fargo, North Dakota, and is a member of Missouri Valley Conference. The North Dakota State Bison football program won a national championship every from 2011 to 2014, and had the longest winning streak in Division 1-AA. James Madison is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, while Illinois State is a member of the Missouri Valley conference. Harvard Crimson football is one of the oldest football programs in the world and is a member of the Ivy League conference.

As of 2015, there are 125 teams in Division 1-AA spread across 14 different leagues. Some leagues in Division 1-AA football or the FCS are Big Sky conference, Big South conference, Ivy League, Missouri Valley conference and Patriot League. East Tennessee State is the only Division 1-AA team that is in an independent league. The only leagues that don't offer scholarships are the Ivy League and the Pioneer Football League.
