Soccer can be traced back to a game children played in London, England in the early 19th century. The official rules of the game, known as "football" in England, were drawn up in London in 1863.
Children and college students played soccer, or football, on a regular basis in the early 1800s. It was during this time that it was adopted as a sport regularly played at school. Prior to that, it was commonly used as a way for villages to compete against each other.
In 1882, players formed the International Football Association Board, which first officially met 4 years later. This group worked hard to establish a number of rules that are still in place in the game.
