During his 18 years in professional baseball, he collected 3,000 hits and hit 240 home runs. He was also one of the league's best fielders, winning 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards. He was also a 15-time N.L. All-Star.

While on a mercy mission to Nicaragua on December 31, 1972, the plane that he was on crashed, killing all of the people aboard. Clemente was posthumously inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.
