Junior Middleweight boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez won a split decision over Erislandy Lara on July 12, 2014. Alvarez, Mexico's biggest boxing star, won the first two judges' scorecards 115-113 and 117-111. However, he lost the third judge's vote 115-113.
With the win in Las Vegas, Alvarez raised his record to 44-1-1, with his only loss coming to Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight pitted two different styles against each other. Alvarez, a right-handed fighter, landed heavier punches and preferred to stay stationary, whereas Lara, a southpaw, was more active in the ring and landed lighter jabs. Lara's team immediately demanded a rematch. However, Alvarez declined. With the fight, Alvarez made $1.5 million in addition to a share of the profits of the pay-per-view broadcast.
