It was created by Dr. Carl Spengler and first played 1923, and featured the Oxford University Ice Hockey against Berliner SC. Although it was originally intended to highlight teams from Europe following World War I, the tournament grew significantly to include the finest hockey organizations in the world, including teams from the Soviet Union, Sweden, Germany, Canada and the United States.
