Soft surfboards, also known as "soft top surfboards," are produced by companies such as Ron Jon, Greco Surf, Liquid Shredders and Surftech. Soft top surfboards are often recommended for novice surfers, because they are built for high buoyancy.
Softboards are offered in either shortboard or longboard designs, depending on the company. They come in a range of sizes from 4 foot, 8 inches up to 11 feet and are used by children and adults. Soft top surfboards range in price from around $80 to $600 as of 2015.
Consider the surfer's optimal width, length and thickness before purchasing a soft top surfboard. The weight of the board is also an important factor. Most soft top surfboards typically include fins, but companies such as Ron Jon also sell a finless soft top surfboard that can be used for surfing and bodyboarding.
The four primary types of surfboard designs are the thruster, Malibu, fish and gun. A thruster is also called a shortboard. A standard size Malibu is also known as a longboard, and a smaller Malibu is referred to as a funboard. The fish is styled as a shorter version of the shortboard and is not intended for novice surfers. A bigger version of the board used in the big wave arena is the called the gun.
