According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, over 18,000 high schools in the United States had boy's basketball teams and more than 17,000 high schools had girl's basketball programs during the 2014-2015 school year. While basketball is the most popular high school sport, football has the most participants, with over one million students involved in the sport. Lacrosse is the fastest growing high school sport in the United States.
Track and field is the second most participated high school sport between boys and girls: over 570,000 boys and 470,000 girls participate in the sport. Over 800,000 boys and girls participate in soccer, while more than 480,000 boys participate in baseball. In total, 7.8 million people participate in high school sports, and the states with the most participants are Texas, California, New York, Illinois and Ohio.
