Cricket, a bat and ball game with 11 players per team, traces its roots to 16th-century England and became the country's national sport by the end of the 18th century. The game soon spread overseas, and the sport's first international match was held in the mid-19th century. In addition to England and Australia, the sport is also very popular in New Guinea, New Zealand, South Asia, the West Indies and South Africa.
The governing body of the sport is the International Cricket Council, formed in 1909. Along with the Marylebone Cricket Club, the ICC also oversees the laws of cricket, 42 rules outlining how the game is played.
As of 2014, the ICC has 10 full, 38 associate and 57 affiliate member countries. The ICC is the organizer of the sport's biggest showcase, the Cricket World Cup, held every four years, as well as of the qualifying events in-between. The most successful club in Cup history is Australia, winner of four and runner-up of two of the 10 events held since 1975.Learn more about Cricket
