The Maple Leafs is a professional hockey team that was founded in 1917, the same year the NHL was founded. The team began playing without an official name before becoming the Toronto Arenas in its second season, named after the company which owned the team's stadium. When the Arena Company had to sell the team in 1919, the new owners named it the Toronto St. Patricks. These owners sold the team in 1927 to a group that included Conn Smythe. Smythe changed the name to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The team has had significant success, winning the Stanley Cup championship more times than most other teams, as of 2015, despite a championship drought for over 40 years. The Hockey Hall of Fame has inducted over 50 players who played for the Maple Leafs.
