Full Answer

Copa Sudamericana is an annual football competition organized by the South American Football Confederation since 2002, replacing the Copa Merconorte and Copa Mercosur competitions.

The winning team becomes eligible to compete in the Copa Libertadores, Recopa Sudamericana and the Suruga Bank Championship.

Teams qualify to enter the tournament based on their performance in half-year tournaments called the Apertura and Clausura. As of 2016, each qualifying team receives $400,000 and the winner receives a prize of $500,000, awarded directly by the South American Football Confederation.
