Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn founded Homes for the Holidays during his rookie season. The program is geared toward helping single parents become first-time homeowners and is dedicated to his late mother, Betty Smothers, an off-duty police officer shot and killed in 1993.
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates, the National Football League and various corporations, HFTH provides food, down payment assistance, furnishings, decor and home and garden supplies to help ease the financial transition to new home ownership. Support services are also provided to address education, financial literacy and nutrition. As of 2014, the program has provided assistance to more than 100 single parents and 300 children.
