How Often Is the America's Cup Challenge?

The America's Cup yacht race does not follow a definite schedule. The event is held when a qualified yacht club challenges the club holding the Cup; the winner chooses the venue for the next event.

The inaugural competition was held in 1851 with the New York Yacht Club defeating the Royal Yacht Squadron of England. The American club successfully defended the Cup for 132 years before succumbing to a successful 1983 challenge by Australia's Royal Perth Yacht Club.

As of 2015, 35 events have taken place; the five most recent were held in 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013. The next event is slated for 2017 in Bermuda, with Italy's Circolo della Vela Sicilia set to challenge reigning champion Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco.
