Where Were the 2016 Olympics Held?

The 2016 Summer Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio de Janeiro beat out Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid to win its bid to host the Olympics.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge announced the choice of Rio on Oct. 2, 2009, at the 121st session of the International Olympic Committee. The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics began on Aug. 5, 2016, and ended on Aug. 21st, 2016. The Games took place in four zones of the city: Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã. Rio de Janiero was the first city in South America to host the Olympic Games and the only non-Australian city in the southern hemisphere to host them.
