Turn recycled wooden pallets into bookshelves, rustic-styled patio furniture or unique vertical planters. Recycled wooden pallets are often available free of charge or for a nominal fee.
To create bookshelves, clean a pallet thoroughly, then cut it into sections with one slat on one side and two on the other. Paint them or leave them natural for a more rustic look. Mount them on a wall with the one-sided slat facing out and use them to hold books, pictures and other odds and ends.
Pallet patio furniture is decidedly rustic. After cleaning, stack the pallets and firmly screw them together to form different items. For example, make a love seat by putting two stacks of pallets together. Each stack can be two to three pallets high, depending on preference.
Use cut pallets for the back and then sand the entire piece until smooth. Paint the love seat, or leave the wood natural with a coating of varnish. Make some seat cushions for comfort and add throw pillows for style.
Make vertical planters by stapling landscaping paper to one side of the pallet and along three edges. Set the planter horizontally on the ground to add soil and plants. After the plants take root, mount the planter on a wall or fence, or lean it against a flat surface. This idea works well for patios and small gardens and is great for growing herbs.
