There are many ways people waste water, but some of the more common forms include bathing, flushing the toilet and shaving. Running a washer or dishwasher at less than full capacity and overfilling bathtubs with more water than is needed are also top ways to waste water.
Leaks are also a major source of wasted water. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), leaky faucets in a typical household average 10,000 gallons of wastage per annum, with more than a trillion combined gallons of water wasted in the United States each year due to leaky faucets and leaks in household irrigation systems. As many as 10 percent of all homes have leaks that amount to up to 90 gallons of water being wasted per day.
