Zinc nitrate is commonly used in the manufacture of inorganic zinc compounds ranging from catalysts to pigments and mordant in dyeing. This compound is also used in the manufacturing of medicines. Zinc nitrate solution is used as a foliar spray, and it is also added to irrigation water or liquid fertilizer for soil application. Zinc nitrate is an excellent precursor for the production of high-purity compounds and nanoscale materials.
Zinc nitrate is a colorless crystalline solid, and it’s chemical formula is Zn(NO3)2. It is soluble in both water and alcohol. This compound is noncombustible but accelerates the burning of combustible materials. When zinc nitrate is heated, it forms zinc oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen. It leaves a residue that is yellow. Zinc forms zinc nitrate in a reaction with nitric acid, and it decomposes at around 110 to 125 C.
Zinc nitrate is also an oxidizing agent. When mixed with hydrocarbons, nitrate compounds can form a flammable mixture that can be very explosive and dangerous. It reacts aggressively with combustible and reducing materials. The mixture of zinc nitrates with alkyl esters may explode due to the formation of alkyl nitrates and mixtures with reducing agents like phosphorus or tin (II) chloride.
