Most house plants, flowering plants, vegetables and certain kinds of fruits can be grown in a hydroponic system. Many different types of herbs can also be grown hydroponically.
Growing vegetables via a hydroponic system allows them to grow year-round and produces a larger yield in a shorter amount of time. Growing them hydroponically also takes up considerably less space. Types of vegetables that do well in a hydroponic system include artichokes, celery, beets, carrots and eggplants. Tomatoes are one of the most popular plants grown in a hydroponic system as they ripen eight weeks earlier on average and produce a greater yield.
Fruits also usually grow well in a hydroponic system, although gardeners should be sure to follow the specific care instructions for each plant. Typically, any fruit that loves water, like melons or strawberries, can grow successfully in this system. Other popular fruits to grow hydroponically include blackberries, blueberries and grapes.
Herbs usually grow fast and require minimum care hydroponically; some of the most popular to grow include arugula, basil, dill and thyme. Flowers are a popular choice to grow as well, as they can be grown outside of their normal season and the seedlings can be easily cultivated.
