Start by adjusting the NMR spectrometer according to the nucleus of the toluene, specifically the proton. This is done in order to obtain a specific spectrum that is associated with the chemical toluene.
Suspend the glass tube between two poles that emit strong magnetic waves.
Randomly spin the toluene in the glass. This levels up any variations within the magnetic field and offsets any flaws within the tube. An antenna coil, usually red in color, is used to relay radio frequency waves of appropriate energy to the toluene sample.
To absorb the radio frequency energy emitted through the tube containing the toluene, the tube is coiled with another receiver coil. This receiver coil then transmits data to electronic devices like computers. All other organic and inorganic compounds are visible in the receiving computer. Their atom characteristics are visible, and the results show what kinds of compounds are present in the toluene. In case of an impurity like water, the hydrogen molecules absorb the radio frequency energy, and their resonance is visible.
