The surface temperature of Ceres averages 130 to 200 degrees Kelvin. Ceres was first classified as a planet when it was discovered in 1801 but was later downgraded to an asteroid. Its status was raised to a dwarf planet in 2006 when Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet.
Ceres orbits the Sun and uses the star as a source of heat. Located in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, it has many of the same characteristics as Europa, one of Jupiter's many moons. NASA's Dawn mission launched in 2007 to study and observe Ceres with the hope of finding water or ice on the dwarf planet.
