The skull has 21 bones that are fused together and a jaw bone that forms the only movable joint in the skull. There are five main categories of bones, including long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones, sesamoid bones and structural bones. Each bone type develops in different locations in the human body and performs different functions. The two main types of bone tissue are compact and cancellous tissue.
