A storm-chasing vehicle is a truck, SUV or van customized with a variety of technology, cameras and safety equipment that allows people to pursue extreme weather conditions such as tornadoes. These vehicles are equipped with radios, cellular phones and computers that allow the occupants to communicate with their headquarters.
Storm chasers attempt to locate, approach and document the conditions of storms with meteorological sensors, such as Doppler radar, and video cameras. Storm-chasing vehicles cannot survive in the direct path of a tornado and are not considered a safe place to take refuge. Some have been reinforced with body armor, bulletproof windows, wind skirts and stabilizers to help protect them in high winds.
