Uric acid is a chemical compound produced during the metabolic breakdown of purine, an organic compound found in meat products, fish, seafood, vegetables, grains and other foods. It is also produced from the breakdown of the body’s cells.
Uric acid is a human waste product filtered out of the body by the kidneys, explains Mayo Clinic. If the body produces excess uric acid or the kidneys are unable to eliminate the acid fast enough, this can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.
There are also certain factors that can raise the levels of uric acid. These include excessive alcohol consumption, diuretic medications, niacin, purine-rich foods and certain medical conditions.
