What Is a Producer in the Ocean?

Producers can create their own food; the largest example of a producer is a plant. There are two kinds of plants found in the ocean: microscopic plants that float around and bigger plants that grow from the ground.

Many producers can be found on the ocean floor, but some phytoplankton can be found in shallow waters, and some are also floating plants. They generate the major source of energy in the food chain by using the process of photosynthesis, using the sun's energy to create the nutrients they need, eventually passing those nutrients to the many other inhabitants of the ocean that feed off of them.
