The Mediterranean Sea is the most polluted ocean in the world because it is almost entirely surrounded by land. The sea is heavily trafficked and fished by the 19 nations that rely on it for food and income.
The waters of the Mediterranean Sea can take over a century to clean and renew themselves. According to the European Environment Agency, current levels of pollution in the Mediterranean are placing as much as 65 percent of all fish stock at risk. Only 1 percent of the Mediterranean is fully protected from the dangers of commercial fishing operations and the effects of industrial trade and traffic.
