Plants provide several benefits to humans, including the filtration of carbon dioxide into oxygen and increasing the humidity of the environment. Plants also improve the mood and health of people who spend time near them.
When humans breathe in oxygen, exhaling produces a waste product called carbon dioxide. This compound is a vital element of the photosynthesis process plants use to create their food. After a plant takes in carbon dioxide, it releases oxygen back into the environment. Filling a room with plants increases the amount of oxygen in the room, and has the added benefit of filtering out other types of pollutants in the air.
Another byproduct of the photosynthesis process is water vapor. A large portion of the water plants take in is released back into their environment. This water, in the form of water vapor, fills the air and increases the humidity in that area.
Plants also help people to feel better. In a study performed by Kansas State University researchers, hospital patients were found to recover faster when near plants. Patients staying in rooms that contained plants experienced a decrease in anxiety, requested less pain medication and were discharged more quickly than patients who did not have plants in their rooms.
