It is established by Sabatini and others that this buffer cannot be used for certain scientific experiments done for plants. This is because higher levels of phosphate can become toxic to the plant cells. The pH range of 5.8 to 8 is attributed to the sodium phosphate buffer at the temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
