How Are the Particles in a Crystalline Solid Arranged?

In a crystalline solid, the particles have a regular and repeating pattern that is also three-dimensional. The repeated pattern of crystalline solids is known as the crystalline lattice. Many of the solids that form in nature have a crystalline pattern.

Crystalline solids include quartz, minerals, limestone, diamonds, sodium chloride, graphite, copper sulfate and potassium chloride. There are different kinds of crystalline solids that include metallic, covalent, ionic and molecular solids. The difference in these crystalline solids is in their bonding. Salt is an example of an ionic solid, while sucrose is a molecular solid.

Besides crystalline solids, other solid types are amorphous solids. This solid type does not have an ordered structure that is 3-D.
