VHS tapes can be recycled if taken apart. The hard outer plastic casing of the tape can be recycled, but the insides cannot be.
The inside of a VHS tape is made of mylar. Mylar is not safe to be recycled. The tape is also coated in chemicals that are not safe for the environment. If the tapes are thrown away with household trash, it can cause toxic chemicals to leech out into the area. Instead, the tapes should be sent to a facility that handles electronic waste. The tapes can also be donated or sold to a person with interest in them.
