The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has recorded footage that some people claim contains UFOs, but no credible evidence supports that the images are linked to extraterrestrial life. Some claimed UFOs filmed by NASA are identifiable and thus do not even meet the literal meaning of UFO, "unidentified flying object."
A NASA group conducted in-depth analysis of an apparent UFO near the moon in four seconds of footage from the 1972 Apollo 16 space mission. The group concluded that all evidence suggested a floodlight used for a spacewalk during the mission caused the appearance of a UFO.
UFOs are a common subject for conspiracy theories about government cover-ups, but NASA astronaut Mario Runco told Popular Mechanics that he and other astronauts would be highly motivated to publicize anything they believed indicated the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life.
