Muscles are composed of muscle tissues and muscle cells. The cells found in muscles are highly specialized contractile cells. Muscles may be classified as skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle or smooth muscle, depending on the type of cells found in each muscle.
Skeletal muscles contain striated muscle tissues that are anchored by tendons to bones throughout the body. Cardiac muscles are found only in the heart and are composed of striated tissues. The striated tissues of both skeletal and cardiac muscles are composed of highly packed arrangements of sarcomeres that provide the muscle with nutrition necessary for movement. Smooth muscles are composed of smooth muscle tissue and are not voluntarily controlled.
