How Much Larger Is Uranus Than Earth?

Uranus is around four times larger than Earth. Its mass is made of helium, ice and ammonia, which contributes to its color. Because of its mass and position in the universe, Uranus presents significantly different conditions to those on Earth.

Uranus is 31,763 miles across. Its mass is 14.5 times the size of Earth's, and it features a blend of helium that sinks from the surface into the middle, ice, ammonia and other gases. As Uranus is on its side while orbiting the sun, its center influences the weather more than the surface does. Uranus rests on its side, resulting in its equator receiving the most heat and warm winds. The presence of methane on the planet absorbs red light moving towards it, giving it a blue appearance.

Because of the gas there is no firm surface, and the planet features several layers. Uranus has the solar system's coldest temperature, which is minus 238 degrees Fahrenheit. Although it is too far from the sun to generate significant heat, Uranus' thermosphere can reach 1034.6 degrees F. Scientists are unsure as to why this is. This planet takes 84 years to rotate around the sun, and spends half of its time in darkness with the other half in daylight.
