There are 2,000 average walking steps in a mile. An average walking step is 2.5 feet in length, and a moderately active person takes between 5,000 and 7,500 steps per day.
Pedometers are used to track how many steps are taken in a given period of time. A sedentary person takes less than 2,500 steps per day. Those who are physically able may increase the number of steps they take each day, for a total of 500 additional steps per week. For example, a person walking 3,000 steps per day who wishes to increase to 5,000 steps per day may consider a four-week program starting with a goal of 3,500 steps per day and increasing the number of steps by 500 each week until 5,000 steps is reached in the fourth week.
