According to Inner Body, there are approximately 700 muscles in both the male and female body. The 700 named muscles make up approximately half of a person's total body weight. All of the muscles belong to one of the three distinct types: visceral, cardiac and skeletal.
Visceral muscles are found inside organs and are considered to be the weakest type of muscle tissue. The cardiac muscle is only found in the heart, and its prime responsibility is to ensure that blood is pumped throughout the body. A person only has control over skeletal muscles. These are the muscles that are involved in moving, speaking and writing.
