There are 60 minutes in one degree. In geometry, a circle is divided into 360 degrees. Therefore, there are 21,600 minutes in a circle. Minutes are further divided into seconds, with 60 seconds in each minute.
The minute is also used in the nautical term "arc minute," also known as an arcminute or minute of arc. The common abbreviations used for this unit are arcmin or amin. In navigation, when measuring at sea level, one minute arc along the equator is approximately equal to 1 nautical mile, or 1.85 km. The standard keyboard symbol used to indicate the minute is the prime, but some use a single quote when only ASCII characters are available. Thus, one minute may be typed as 1? or 1'.
