How Many Bones Are in a Male and Female Body?

According to About.com, an adult male body and an adult female body each contain 206 bones. The largest bone in the body is the femur, which is the upper part of the leg known as the thigh bone.
The smallest bone is called the stirrup bone. Also referred to as incus, malleus and stapes, this tiny bone is located in the middle ear.
Bones are a major component of the skeletal system. The system protects and supports the body. It also provides the body's form and shape while offering mobility. Other integral parts of the skeletal system include cartilage, tendons, ligaments and joints.
