Cut the spout off the 1-liter plastic bottle, and tape the bottle to a piece of cardboard. Place balls of crumpled newspaper around the bottle in a mountain shape, making the opening of the bottle the peak of the volcano. Tape these newspaper balls together.
Tear newspaper into strips. Mix 1 cup of flour and 2 cups of water together to make a paste, and dip the newspaper strips into the paste. Lay the strips on the newspaper balls to create a lumpy volcano shape. Let the paper mache dry overnight, and then paint the volcano brown.
Fill up most of the bottle with warm water, and add food coloring. Red best resembles the color of actual lava, but any color can be used. Add six drops of dish detergent to the bottle to ensure bubbly lava. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to this mixture.
When ready for the volcano to erupt, add vinegar to the baking soda mixture.
