Clay volcanoes are a fun and simple way to exhibit the propulsive forces of volcanoes around the world. Making clay volcanoes is a simple project that can be completed in a few short hours.
To make a clay volcano, a mixing bowl, baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, 2-liter plastic bottle, funnel, measuring spoon, measuring cup, flour, salt, cooking oil and water are necessary. First, the clay must be made. To do so, combine 6 cups of flour, 2 cups of salt, 4 tablespoons of cooking oil and 2 cups of water in a mixing bowl. Knead the clay until it is firm and dry.
Next, the clay must be formed around the plastic bottle and shaped to appear like a volcano. With the funnel, place 3 tablespoons of baking soda into the plastic bottle, a few drops of dish soap and one-half cup of water.
To make the volcano erupt, add half of a cup of vinegar to the volcano. It will erupt immediately. The eruption is due to the vinegar and the baking soda mixing. When the two materials mix, they react and form carbon dioxide gas, which pushes the fake lava out of the volcano. To reuse the volcano, clean the lava off of the clay, and add the same measurements of baking soda and vinegar to the plastic bottle.
