Oils and fats are examples of organic molecules. Lauric acid is an organic molecule. It is a chain of hydrogen and carbon atoms with two oxygen atoms at the end. This makes it a fatty acid as opposed to a hydrocarbon such as octane.
Nucleic acids are also organic molecules. These are RNA and DNA. These proteins are different from others in that they impart information. DNA, for example, is made up of four types of nucleotides in a specific order. They contain all the information an organism needs to live and reproduce.
Scientists at first believed that molecules that contain carbon were organic molecules, as all living things on earth contained carbon. Later, the belief was refined to state that molecules with carbon and hydrogen were organic molecules. However, some scientists believe that fluorocarbons are also organic molecules.
