The United States Environmental Protection Agency website provides a national list of all landfills which accept asbestos-containing waste. These include Fort Devens Landfill in Massachusetts, Cecos Landfill in New York and Mayport Naval Station Incinerator in Florida.
Asbestos is a mineral once commonly used in construction as electrical and building insulation. Prolonged inhalation of asbestos can cause malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis and other serious, fatal illnesses.
The use of asbestos in construction is now banned in many developed countries, including the European Union, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. The United States, however, permits the use of asbestos in new construction projects, such as cement asbestos pipes.
