Hurricanes occur in the Bahamas, especially during the official hurricane season which lasts from the beginning of June to the end of November. The risk of hurricanes is highest during August, September and October, but hurricanes have been known occur during other months.
The Bahamas are affected by a minor hurricane once in every three years and a major one once in every 12 years on average. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, has a one-in-five chance of being hit by a hurricane every year. However, three islands in the Bahamas, Andros, Abaco and Grand Bahama, face a much higher risk. These islands are among the top 10 North Atlantic cities, islands and countries most likely to be affected by tropical systems.
