Where Do Hurricanes Occur Most Often?

Hurricanes occurs most often near shores and coastlines, especially where there is a lot of warm tropical water. The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans generate the greatest number of hurricanes. Strong hurricanes have the ability to affect inhabitants far inland.

Hurricanes occur far more often in the Pacific Ocean, specifically the West Pacific, than in the Atlantic Ocean. The vulnerable islands of the Philippines are often victims of 20 or more hurricanes annually. Hurricanes that form in the Atlantic Ocean affect the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and southern United States, such as Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina -- sometimes even further north. Only one hurricane has ever formed in the South Atlantic Ocean: Hurricane Catarina. The majority of Atlantic cyclones form in the months of August and September.
