Though a popular misconception held that the Mayan calendar ended with the destruction of everything in existence, the end of the calendar was simply the end of an era, after which the calendar would reset. Some people believed that the Mayan calendar, which ended on a date that coincided with December 21, 2012, predicted the end of the world, but this is not the case.

Aside from the fact that the world clearly did not end on December 21, 2012, this popular misconception is a misrepresentation of how Mayans kept time. Though this date did coincide with a major end point on the Mayan calendar, that end point would have been a time of celebration similar to the last day of a millennium on the Gregorian calendar.
