Food-grade peroxide is a 35 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Several companies sell it over the counter as a pseudoscientific remedy for various incurable diseases. The Food and Drug Administration has warned that these products are being marketed illegally and that they are not safe for internal consumption.
Marketers of food-grade peroxide have made wholly unsubstantiated medical claims for their products. These claims include treatment of emphysema, AIDS and several types of cancer. The FDA has sent warning letters to the manufacturers in an effort to compel them to cease claiming health benefits and to alert the public that 35 percent hydrogen peroxide is a dangerous corrosive agent that is not safe to drink.
