Food chains and food webs demonstrate how energy passes through an ecosystem, although a food web is a more thorough interpretation. In it, two broad categories exist: autotrophs, which produce complex organic chemicals through sunlight and nutrients, and heterotrophs, which must consume the autotrophs for growth.
